![]() ![]() ![]() Here we have a book that ostensibly gives us an old-fashioned tale worthy of Edgar Allan Poe, but that steeps it in a serious and thought provoking discussion of the roles of both lies and stories when you’re facing difficulties in your life. I hope I’m not giving too much away by saying that. Long story short this novel is Little Shop of Horrors meets The Secret Garden. Auxier took his whimsy, pulled out a long sharp stick, and stabbed it repeatedly in the heart and left it to die in the snow so as to give us a sublimely horrific little novel. A relatively new middle grade author, still young in the field, reading this book it’s hard to reconcile it with Auxier’s previous novel Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes. And though none would contest the fact that they are creepy, only Jonathan Auxier’s The Night Gardener has had the chutzpah to actually write, “A Scary Story” on its title pages as a kind of thoughtful dare. Fantasy in particular has been steeped in a kind of thoughtful darkness, from The Glass Sentence and The Thickety to The Riverman and Twelve Minutes to Midnight with varying levels of success. For whatever reason, 2014 is a dark year in children’s middle grade fiction. ![]()

![]() ![]() John and his wife, newly married, decided to sharpen their parenting skills, which they thought they would soon need, by purchasing a dog. ![]() ![]() Life would never be the same.” That description from the slip cover, obviously written by an editor, does not quite do justice to the back-story, but does give a general idea of the premise for this story. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. “John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. It just so happened that this dubious honor went to Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. To that end I walked into a Los Angeles Barnes & Nobles on Saturday and decided I would buy whatever was listed as being the current top seller among non-fiction. I recently decided that I would attempt to read not only books that are published and widely read within the Christian community, but also in the mainstream. ![]() ![]() She blames herself for her sister’s death and this is why she is finding it hard to move on. As she’s unable to communicate this feeling to Edward, he imbues her actions with false meanings, drawing from his understanding of social conventions to fill in the blanks – she’s shaking because she’s terrified and repulsed and ashamed, but Edward assumes she’s shaking because she’s nervous and excited, because don’t all young women act demure to mask a secret sensuality? There is no precedent for Florence falling outside this expected norm. Florence is asexual, though the term asexual is never used because of the time period, and the lack of access to this concept and vocabulary has led Florence to believe that she’s fundamentally broken. ![]() ![]() What should be a romantic weekend quickly devolves into something much sadder as an ocean of miscommunications piles up between the two characters. On Chesil Beach is an almost-love story about Florence and Edward, two young lovers on their honeymoon on the coast of England in 1962. I could not believe the emotional torment he managed to put me through in the space of 200 bite-sized pages. I didn’t know what to expect from On Chesil Beach, having only read and been somewhat underwhelmed by Atonement about a decade ago, but I have now officially been converted to the church of Ian McEwan. ![]() ![]() Ahora, además de escuchar, imaginar, descubrir, sentir y pensar, los niños pueden ser parte de la acción. Most of all, this book is a gateway book to ancient Indian Treatises, because it combines elements of mythology, ecology, consciousness, creation (The Big Bang), and provides beautiful metaphorical insights into heavier concepts like consciousness, creation, cosmos. The second chapter that rings true in this age of excess of self-help and self-improvement gurus was about Yuj (Yog) - how Yoga has its own way of manifesting itself in people's lives through their karma, there can be Bhakti Yogis, and then, there can be Karm Yogis, and both are embracing Yoga in their lives. ![]() Each chapter was its own thesis, and what stuck with me, in particular, were two chapters, the one on the eternal pillar of light, where the eternal sound from afar commands the Gods to manifest both movement and stillness the paradox is the seat of all creation - a wonderful analogy to demonstrate that truth. I don't mind admitting that I went to obscure pages of Yogipedia and those parts of the internet that hide articles on Vedic literature and Vedic calendars, upon reading just a single page of the book. ![]() It looks like a small book to complete because it's less of text and more of immersive artwork, but there is so much symbolism in the art and meaning encapsulated in the laconic language, that it took its own sweet time. It's my personal pet peeve, but it's also my rating. There are reasons for that, but I'm a bit tired of it. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, with all its originality, it still tells a story about a petite girl that dislikes eating and the male has to care and provide. It shed a light on our society's shadows, without bringing brightness to our world. ![]() The story flowed naturally and methodically with facts and emotions it had some poetry in the words that mathematically described how those characters were able to do what they did and how one thing led to another. Entertaining and well written, this book provided with one hand and stole with the other. ![]() ![]() Some of the other character's didn't impress me as much (ie, Blue - although it's a cute name) but I still liked them. I felt I really connected with Remy, the main character and liked her a lot. All the action scenes are pretty frantic. These zombies are not the slow, lumbering moaners from the usual zom-fests, these zombies are jacked up crazies and can pick up a bit of speed. It's a very satisfying story and right from the very first line the reader is hauled slap-bang into the thick of it. I'm not sure how long I've had this one but it seems like an age. It seems it's true what they say about covers, and judging. That's a lovely cover and not a hint of zombie about it. ![]() How could I not know that?! I thought it was the usual YA fare and admit that the cover had a lot to do with that. ![]() ![]() Had I known that this book was about a zombie apocalypse I'd have been all over it a LONG time ago. ![]() ![]() Of course, there can be many more characters. Then there’s the head of the family we either love or love to hate. ![]() There’s the royal we’re rooting for, either because they just found out they’re royal or because they’ve been thrust into an unsettling situation. There’s always one person who hates being a royal and can cause some havoc-which makes for interesting reading, in my opinion. I could create my own rules but base it on enough realism to make the story seem believable.Īnother big fixture in a royal romance is the cast of characters. In writing my own royal stories, I thought creating a fictional country would offer the best of both worlds. Whatever draws the reader to royal stories, the author feels the need to offer a royal expectation. ![]() ![]() Is it our secret desire to find out we belong to royalty? Is it the fairy-tale aspect of the read that offers an escape from our own troubles? Is it simply because so many of us don’t have a monarchy in place, so the mystery of it all holds our intrigue? There’s something about a royalty romance that resonates in the hearts of readers. ![]() |
